Design and build
Starting off with the design. It’s not hard to miss how the Oppo A55 looks Chi in its rainbow-ish color. The phone shows some rainbow hues depending on the angle of the lighting. This is the case with the Rainbow Blue version but it Is also available in Starry Black and Green. Located at the back, it’s a triple rear camera, LED flash, and Oppo branding. It does fill well built even though it is made out of polycarbonate material. The back has a glossy finish so make sure to take advantage of the free case included in the box. This one is a fingerprint magnet that is what we are trying to say.
Flipping up to its front, it’s got a hole punch notch on the upper left for the selfie camera. While on the top part is the earpiece. The bezels are thin, but they have a pretty thick chin. There’s no mention of any glass protection, but Oppo A55 comes with screen protection preinstalled. On the left side of the phone are the volume controls and a triple card tray for two nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. While on the right side are the power/unlock button, which also doubles as a fingerprint scanner. Download the bottom are the main microphone, 3.5-millimeter headphone Jack, USB-C port, and the loudspeaker.
Cameras
Oppo A55 has got triple rear shooters utilizing a 50-megapixel main camera, 2-megapixel macro, and a 2 megapixel one for depth sensing. Flipping over to its front. And we have a 16-megapixel selfie shooter. Checking out the quality, oftentimes photo looks decent with enough details and sharpness. Colors are often accurate and the dynamic range is decent. There’s also a macro camera, but as expected, it produces low-quality images. On the other hand, selfies can be very good which is what Oppo is well known for. Just make sure to have good lighting. When it comes to videos, this phone can take up to 1080 P of 30 frames per second just like most smartphones at this price point.
Display
Now more on the display, the Oppo A55 has a 6.51 inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1600 by 720 capable of having 270 PPI. Even though it only has an LCD panel, surprisingly, it produces a bunch of colors and has decent viewing angles. This device gives an immersive viewing experience when watching content on YouTube o Netflix. The display as it is bright and vibrant. In the display settings, you can choose the screen temperature to cool, default, and warm. You can also opt to choose what dark mode style you prefer. Overall, this display is decent and will suffice your daily needs.
Platform
Powering the Oppo A55 is MediaTek MT6765G Helio G35 (12 nm) chipset that is paired with a PowerVR GE8320 GPU, 4GB RAM, and 64 GB of internal storage. It can handle basic tasks and it is good for day-to-day tasks. Well, this isn’t a gaming smartphone, so don’t expect too much really. But you know, overall the MediaTek MT6765G Helio G35 performs smoothly for basic activities, such as video streaming, social media browsing, and anything of that like.
Audio
And when it comes to audio, this device only comes with a single downward-firing speaker with a quality that usually comes with its price range. It’s good for voice calls and listening to podcasts, but you’ll be better off with headphones for a listening experience. Good thing. There’s a 3.5-millimeter audio port. So you don’t need to worry about getting a wireless pair of earbuds if at all that is a turnoff.
Battery and more
Oppo A55 comes with the usual connectivity features such as dual SIM, 4G LTE, Wifi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, USB type C, and the 3.5-millimeter audio jack. Powering it is a 5,000 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. This is an ample amount to last you a full day of usage.
As for biometrics and security, you can choose between facial recognition or the side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Both works as intended, but we highly recommend you use the fingerprint scanner for a higher level of security. Running on the Oppo A55 is Android 11, ColorOS 11.1. Overall, if you’re familiar with and used to this UI, it’s basically straightforward to use.
Our take
Oppo released another budget smartphone for the year 2021, the Oppo A55. It offers a large 6.51 inches display, triple rear cameras, a MediaTek MT6765G Helio G35 (12 nm) processor, and a 5,000 mAh battery. Seems like the design of this phone might have been the primary focus. But overall, the design is not that unique from other A-series, but still, it is a fun one especially in this colorway on the Rainbow Blue version. It is also more comfortable to grip in easy to hold compared to its predecessors.
