Design
The OnePlus Nord CE 5G or Core Edition isn’t exactly a successor to the OnePlus Nord from 2020, August 04. It’s more of a slightly trimmed down and refreshed version meant to take on this year as hottest mid Rangers from the likes of Xiaomi and Samsung.
The Nord CE 5G is less than eight millimeters thick, thinner, and lighter than the original OnePlus Nord. The plastic back and frame don’t feel plastic-y. And comes in colors Blue Void, Charcoal Ink, and/or Silver Ray. It’s a matte finish too.
Which is soft and doesn’t show fingerprints. There is a 3.5 millimeter Jack for headphones, but unlike some competitors, you don’t get stereo speakers here. The sound quality is decent, but there’s not much as far as bass goes.
OnePlus Nord CE 5G Platform and performance
You opt for either 128 GB or 256 GB of storage onboard with the OnePlus Nord CE 5G. But that’s it! It isn’t expandable. The interface of the phone is OnePlus’ OxygenOS 11.0.4.4 over Android 11. One of the nicest things about it is that it comes with a promise of 2 years of major software updates and 3 years of security patches from Oneplus.
This Oxygen OS version steps away from stock Android a bit. But no worries since it is still quite fast and bloat-free. A lot of the icons and UI elements have a slightly different look.
The Nord CE 5G has a games app, which organizes your games and provides some settings for customizing the behavior of notifications and calls while you play.
Behind all of these features is a Qualcomm SM7225 Snapdragon 750G 5G (8 nm) chipset. It’s relatively new and actually pretty powerful for this mid-range price segment on top of providing 5G connectivity. CPU performance is pretty much on par here.
OnePlus Nord CE 5G Display
The Nord CE displays a 6.43-inch Fluid AMOLED with a 1080 x 2400 resolution, a fast 90 Hertz refresh rate, and a punch hole in the corner for the selfie camera. That fast refresh rate means that swiping and scrolling on the screen is quite smooth.
And it’s adaptive switching to 60 Hertz if you stop interacting with the display, or if you’re watching video content. However, you don’t get HDR10 support here, and there’s no mention of Gorilla glass Protection. But other than that, this display is great.
The picture here is sharp thanks to OLED. TechnColors are vivid by default, but you can make them very accurate if you switch color modes and brightness is good. This is an always-on display, which is quite customizable. You can use gestures on the lock screen to control a media player or even launch an app.
OnePlus Nord CE 5G features in the under-display fingerprint reader for your biometrics. It’s fast and responsive, but the placement is low and it feels a bit unnatural. Holding your thumb on the fingerprint reader will activate a quick launch menu for shortcuts.
OnePlus Nord CE 5G Cameras
Now OnePlus Nord CE 5G has three cameras on the back. A 64 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), 0.7µm, PDAF, an 8 MP, f/2.3, 119˚ (ultrawide) and 2 MP, f/2.4, (depth). The main camera does a good job. About as good as you can expect for the class. There’s a low noise, good detail.
And why dynamic range There is an occasional over-sharpening. This phone has a depth sensor to help with portraits. And these have great edge detection. The performance of the 8-megapixel ultra-wide is average for the class. You get the wide field of view you’d want.
Selfies are taken with a 16-megapixel front-facing camera. And these are very good with plenty of fine detail and why dynamic range. Videos can be recorded with the main cam and up to 4k resolution at 30 FPS. These are sharp enough with quite a bit of detail. The ultra-wide cam shoots in 1080p. Electronic stabilization is available in all modes and it does an amazing job.
OnePlus Nord CE 5G Battery
Onto battery life. OnePlus Nord CE 5G has a Li-Po 4500 mAh, non-removable battery. Battery life is great here. The phone scores an endurance rating of 117 hours in proprietary tests. Charging speed is quite fast with the bundled 30W adapter you will charge from 0 – 70% in 30 minutes.
